The Sparta and Chadwick fire departments cover nearly 200 square miles in eastern Christian County with a mere 25 volunteers. Chadwick Fire Chief David Finney and Sparta Fire Chief Brian Loula say that’s not an easy task. Which is why both departments are recruiting.
“We’re short on volunteers in the rural part of the district,” Loula said. “We have a lot of help in the city. We have 13 volunteers total, and 10 of those live in the city limits. Out in the rural area where you have less population—that’s where we need volunteers.”
In 2010, the Sparta Fire Department opened Station No. 2 in Bruner. It houses an engine, bringing with it better protection to residents east of Sparta. But Loula says without the manpower, the station and engine don’t do much good.
“We have a lot of area that’s covered by that station, we just don’t have the staff we need to man it. We’ve got three guys that live in the rural district by Station 2. When they aren’t available, it takes us eight to 10 minutes just to get there,” Loula said. “If we had people out in that area, it would cut down our response times to get to the Bruner and Elkhead area.”
With only 12 firefighters, including himself, Finney knows all too well what Sparta is experiencing. And with Chadwick being such a rural area, Finney said time is more valuable than money—a faster response time could save a life.
“The majority of the time, we get there before the ambulance,” said Finney, who’s been chief for seven years. “We go all the way to the Taney County line and only two miles outside of Bradleyville. We have waited as long as 45 minutes on an ambulance while doing CPR.”
Rick Lawler, Chadwick volunteer firefighter, said the department simply needs more volunteers.
“We’re an all-volunteer department, and depending on what time of day a call comes in, we may only have one or two people available to respond,” he said. “If the call is for something that needs a lot of firefighters, a house fire or a trail rescue for example, we may not have enough people to effectively respond to that emergency.”
Sparta and Chadwick fire departments respond to all medical, fire and missing-person calls as well as motor vehicle accidents.
Volunteers must be 18 years old, live in the district and will be required to undergo training, including basic firefighting and medical first response.
“We don’t require you to have any kind of training when you come in, we’ll provide all of that and get you through the classes that you need,” Loula said.
While being a volunteer firefighter is ultimately about helping the community, Loula said it can also be a lot of fun.
“For a lot of guys on the department, they really enjoy it as a hobby. They put a lot of time in and it ends up being something they really look forward to doing.”
Finney, who has been a part of the Chadwick department for 24 years, said being a volunteer firefighter is simply “helping your neighbor.”
And Loula said helping a neighbor, in turn, helps the entire community.
“It’s helping your community—it’s your friends and family who maybe are even in need of help,” Loula said. “You’re just giving time to help your community improve.”
