National Geographic called it “The most dangerous eight seconds in sports.” With the arena stands full, more than 30 cowboys from near and far lined up to muster their courage and their bovine during the annual Ozark Booster Club Bull Ride June 4 and 5.
“We were very happy with the results,” said Booster Club veteran Mike Crain. “Everything came together really well.”
During two nights of riding, rodeo fans had enjoyed thrills and spills courtesy of riders from Ozark to Mississippi. During Friday night’s action, Michael Manes walked away with the overall win with a score of 87, as well as $1,080. Second went to Brandon Wesson, followed by Levi Shrable and Kyle Maxwell.
During Saturday’s round, Sparta’s Dustin Rains took home the victory with a total score of 164 combined with $1,128 in prize money. Rains was trailed by Mason Lowe, Jesse Monroe and Maxwell.
Rains has been involved in rodeos for 14 years, learning from his family.
“My family has always been into it,” he said. “My cousin owns some bucking bulls, and I practice there.”
When asked how he came back for the win Saturday after being bucked off before the required eight seconds, Rains said, “I just didn’t wanna let go.”
His advice to those wanting to get into bull riding is practice.
“Practice is all it takes,” he said.
Bull riders earn points by staying on their mount by holding onto a long, braided rope with one hand for at least eight seconds while the bull tries to throw them. Scores of 0-50 are awarded for both the rider and the bull and combined. A score above 80 is considered excellent. Judges look for control, rhythm, balance and style for the rider and agility, power and speed for the bull.
