A 16-year-old Sparta High School student died June 6 after being pulled from the Finley River June 5 near the Riverside Inn location.
Christian County Sheriff Joey Kyle, June 7, identified the victim as Chancy Cobb. Kyle said the 16-year-old boy was swimming with three female friends at about 4 p.m. June 5 when he went under in a deep pool and failed to surface. Two passing people in a kayak pulled the boy from the river and began resuscitation techniques. He was transported to Cox South Hospital that same day and transferred to the neuro-intensive care unit where he later died.
The incident happened just outside the Ozark city limits, Kyle said. At this time authorities said there was no indication of alcohol or drugs. Kyle said he thought an autopsy was scheduled June 7 to determine if there were any other mitigating factors that led to the drowning.
It is the second drowning in Christian County in as many weeks. Less than two weeks ago a 20-month-old toddler drowned in private swimming pool in Fremont Hills.
