When Sparta’s Ron Wagner opened his newspaper a couple of weeks ago to read Christian County’s financial statement, he realized something was missing. Something he thinks is vitally important to the county’s voters each year, but especially this year.
“I haven’t read anything about the library,” he said. “The library is supported by the entire geographical area of the county.”
Wagner couldn’t find the library’s financial statement included with the Christian County government’s financial disclosures because it wasn’t there. It is its own taxing district and the state does not require the library’s financial statement to be published.

The Sparta Elementary School has been working to put their character words to action. During the second quarter of school the students were learning about what it meant to be a “caring” individual.
Besides just talking about how to be a caring student, the pre-kindergarten through fifth grade teamed up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help raise money for blood cancer patients through the Pennies for Patients program.

Although the city of Sparta’s internal audit presented to the Board of Aldermen’s regular December meeting said the city is “in good shape” the auditor did request the board look into an outstanding bill. The board did just that during the Jan. 12 regular board meeting, discussing the payment in question to Simmon’s Engineering.

The proposal for new libraries is coming back to the ballot in April. The Christian County Library Board voted in December to put the proposal on the spring ballot, but the ballot language was just recently finalized. Pictured is a rendering of the main branch in the three-library proposal. |

The Christian County Library Board agreed to the April ballot language during a special session Jan. 15, solidifying their intent to ask voters for new libraries again.
Voters will see the library levy increase proposal worded as follows:
“Shall the assessed valuation for the Christian County Library District be increased to $0.25 per hundred dollars assessed valuation from the currently collected rate of $0.0875 per hundred dollars assessed valuation?”
The same proposal failed in November by a margin of 3,847 to 3,532, which the library attributes to the low voter turnout of just 14 percent. The ballot language was also considered a possible problem, prompting the re-wording.
