The Sparta class of 2012 is going to make history—those students will be the first to graduate in Sparta’s new high school. And while those students are only high school sophomores today, school administrators, school board members, faculty along with a number of students and community members, took the first step Feb. 26 toward that 2012 goal when breaking ground for the new facility.
“I think it’s going to be a fun adventure. I’m really looking forward to watching it go up with you all and I’m looking forward to 2012 when we have our first graduating class (in the new school),” said Clay Loveland, Sparta school board president.
Voters approved a tax-levy increase and a no-tax-increase bond indebtedness in November 2009 to build the new high school on state Route 14. It is set to open in August 2011.

The city of Sparta is poised to grow, and if the Sparta Board of Aldermen have it their way, the city limits will expand to the northeast on state Route 14.
“Right now the city limits set at the county buildings,” Sparta Mayor Mike Younker said at the Feb. 9 Board of Aldermen meeting. “With the new school going out there, I would like us to be able to control the roads more.”
Voters approved a tax-levy increase and a no-tax-increase bond indebtedness in November 2009 to build a new high school on state Route 14. A groundbreaking ceremony is slated for 2 p.m., Feb. 26.
