The “Welcome to Sparta” signs are showing their age, which is why a number of Sparta students are working to raise funds to replace them.
“Last year we decided to do a community service project. The ‘Welcome to Sparta’ signs are getting pretty old. We’re wanting to replace them,” said Andrea Smith, Sparta High School business teacher and FBLA advisor.
Students involved in the vocational department, which includes the FBLA, FFA and FCCLA, started hosting fundraisers last year, collecting about $750. This year, the clubs hope to increase that to about $2,000 needed to purchase the signs.
Most recently, the vocational department held a co-ed volleyball tournament Feb. 27. It was a success, but the group hopes to see even more participation during the upcoming vocational softball tournament, which is not limited to high-school students.
