Water Woes: One of the reasons the Sparta Board of Aldermen wanted to raise water rates is because the city’s only tower is in need of improvements. The city would also like to install a second water tower. |

When Sparta water bills hit the mailboxes this week, some residents may notice a slight increase. After a 45-minute discussion, the Sparta Board of Aldermen approved a water rate increase during its August regularly monthly meeting.
“This had to be done because the aging water system in town needs to be taken care of,” said Sparta Mayor Mike Younker. “As Sparta grows, the need for water, water pressure and good-quality water in town costs. Hopefully by raising it a little bit now, in the future we won’t have to raise it a lot.”
